Definition of problem :
|
| |
The company is moving into new office premises and has called upon MetaCorp to perform the move of the computer installation.
The new premises are neither cabled nor equipped with network connections to the walls.
|
|
Proposed solutions : |
| |
1. Installation of a hard-wired network, as at before the move. |
| |
Advantages : |
| |
- No additional equipment cost.
- No modification of network infrastructure. |
| |
Disadvantage : |
| |
- Considerable costs for cabling the
premises. |
|
| |
2.
Installation of a mixed hard-wired/WiFi solution combining cabled
links for the servers and routers and wireless links for the client
workstations (the majority of workstations). |
| |
Advantages : |
| |
- No costs for cabling the premises.
- Mobility of workstations, ease of future moves. |
| |
Disadvantage : |
| |
- The costs incurred by the purchase
of wireless equipment (wireless ports and network cards). |
|
Solution adopted : |
| |
The second solution was the one adopted by the companyx.
As they were not certain of staying long in the premises the costs associated with cabling could not have been cost-effective. Moreover, as the company has a certain number of mobile stations equipped with portables, the wireless aspect was a definite advantage for them.
